Thanks for visiting the home of

The thirst-desire of the honey bee is a metaphor to the emotional embrace induced in the deep forest of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Bring your lover and your family and feel the deep changes in emotional poise, brought on by the Natural Wonder of this International Biosphere Reserve.

The Cougar is alive and well in the Smokies and Appalachia. Ray has a  personal story  about witnessing a large mountain lion near Mt. Balsam Cone.

Cougar or Mountain Lion live in the Great Smoky Mountains. I personally saw one in 1986, and there are reports of deer and llama kills.

The Spruce Fir Forest

The spruce-fir forest crowns the Great Smoky Mountain's highest elevations. Most areas above 4,500 feet support some elements of this forest, but it is developed better in elevations above 5,500 feet. Maine, and Quebec, Canada. have similar climates to the spruce-fir forest of the Southern Highlands Forest. The main components of the spruce-fir forest are red spruce and Fraser fir. Other important species include yellow birch, mountain-ash, hobblebush, and blackberries.

Frazier and Douglas Fir are indigenous to the Great Smoky Mountains

Charmed by the Nature in this wilderness area, you might enjoy just walking on many of the Nature trails or being guided on a photo journey into the wilderness areas. Many Restaurants still pack a box lunch, or go for fruit and nuts.

Bring your camera. This might be the trip you see a Mountain Lion.

Bring those old comfortable shoes and clothing that you know will be soft and easy on the body. Smile and be like Nature, well almost!

Bridge at trail head to Mt. LeConte

LeConte Lodge Trail

The First Bridge crossed from Alum Cave Parking Area is located at the beginning of the Trailhead to Mt. LeConte. The tunnel trail to the right approaches this bridge from the lower parking area. Alum Cave was  mined  for gunpowder/alum during the Civil War. The last battle between the white man and the Indians was fought there, ironically, the Indians were slaves for the Union Army and fought against the Confederacy .

Advice for those who plan on doing a bit of Rockhopping, wear a pair of high top tennis shoes or hiking boots in the water. It protects the ankles from sliding into rocks. Rock hopping and skinny dipping are discussed in the Backwoods section at GreatSmoky.com.

You have two choices to build this cobbler:
Mix the cake mix according to the directions and pour evenly over filling. Replace lid and bake until brown. Sprinkle the cake mix evenly over the boiling filling and then sprinkle 1 can of lemon-lime soda evenly over the cake mix. Replace lid and bake until done.
Cooking time is 25 to 30 minutes at approx. 425 degrees. Place 6 6o 8 coals on the bottom and 14 to 20 on the top. Finish with a big scoop of ice cream on each serving and loosen your belt!

River Time!

Life leads the thoughtful One on a course of many windings.
First the course is checked, now it runs strait again.
Here winged thoughts may pour freely forth in words,
There the heavy burden of knowledge must be shut away in silence.

But when two people are at one in their inmost hearts,
They shatter even the strength of iron or of bronze.
And when two people understand each other in their inmost hearts,
Their words are sweet and strong, like the fragrance of orchids.

When I examine myself and my methods of thought, I come to the
conclusion that the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than any
talent for abstract, positive thinking.

Appalachian Tail Story

Before, with Determination. The plan was to go from Max Patch to Hot Springs in North Carolina, but alas, as we left Max Patch in a blizzard,  we could not see the trail or the markers, thus going around and around in circles. The next weekend, we spent enjoyable hours in the hotubs, and also enjoyed the pleasure of our campers in wonderful sunshine.
