After receiving her BA in Fine Arts, with a concentration in painting, from San Jose State University in California in 1969, Valerie went on to a twenty year career as a graphic artist, illustrator, desktop publisher, and writer for a variety of computer companies in what is known as Silicon Valley, the center for technological research and development for the computer industry in California. Valerie also used her artistic talents working in the book publishing environment, and successfully operated her own freelance business.

While maintaining a graphics career in industry, Valerie became an Equine Artist and produced commissioned drawings in pastel and pencil for a variety of clients. Her work was published in Arabian Horse World magazine and Arabian Visions magazine.

After moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1993, she continued her Equine Art and Pet Portrait business. Valerie established herself as a graphic artist and desktop publisher in the community of Santa Fe. In March of 1998 she returned to fine art painting, using acrylics on circular stretched canvases. She has done two series of paintings, thirteen compose the first, and ten the second. A third series is in progress.

Exhibitions include the Design Center, Santa Fe, New Mexico, September, 1998, the Santa Fe Public Library, November, 1998, and The Sacred Art Festival, Santa Fe, New Mexico, May, 1999. The template of thirteen Sacred Faces, Images of the Ancient Ones, is currently being exhibited at Blessingway Publications.

Her return to painting was inspired by a visit to Ghost Ranch, in Abiquiu, where Georgia O'Keeffe lived and worked as a painter. While in Box Canyon,Valerie had a vision of thirteen Ancient Ones, indigenous tribal members who once lived on the North American continent. She was guided to paint them and it changed the direction of her life forever. Valerie is also a published poet. Her future plans include a book of images, poetry, and stories based on ancient cultures.
